I meet people everyday...
most of these interactions feel completely inauthentic.
a handshake, polite smile,
nice to meet you,
textbook eye contact,
elevator speech.
forced interest in whatever the weather is (usually bad)
and whatever your career is (finance, in NYC-how interesting..)
and whatever politically-correct hobbies you are currently dabbling in..
We're taught to present ourselves a certain way in these introduction situations.
Be professional. Be polite.
Be this, be that.
Be more that and less of this...
all to ensure that the person leaves the interaction liking us-
that person who 5 minutes ago didn't even know us.
Seems a bit like bullshit, ay?
What about just being yourself?
With no regard for what people think?
a bit scary, huh?
but I promise you,
there is nothing more liberating.
So this is my introduction;
my elevator speech,
I'm not always polite,
and I'm never professional,
but,
I am always myself
and that fees pretty damn good
I only sleep on couches
I feel completely uncomfortable in business casual
(and all other aspects of corporate America)
I believe bad days are solved by peanut butter and ice cream
(and maybe a shot or two of tequila...)
I love learning and exploring
Old bookstores make me happy
I have a weakness for dark beer, spicy food, and men in flannel...
